Nintendo Explains Why Mini Super Famicom Lacks EarthBound RPG

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

In an interview with Kadokawa's Famitsu.com website on October 11, Kazuyoshi Nishi of Nintendo's general affairs department explained why the North American SNES Classic Edition console contained the EarthBound (Mother 2) RPG, but the Japanese Classic Mini Super Famicom did not. Nishi said that the list of games included in the Japanese release was intended to balance the genre and character of every game, and that there were other RPGs besides EarthBound that Nintendo wanted to include. In addition, Nintendo also wanted to include games that could be played with friends and family, and that the decision was made with the target region in mind.

Both the Western and Japanese editions have rosters of 21 games, but the titles differ slightly. While the SNES Classic Edition has EarthBound, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Punch-Out!!, Super Castlevania IV, and Kirby's Dream Course, the Japanese Mini Super Famicom has Super Soccer, Super Street Fighter II, Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo, Panel de Pon, and The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyūshutsu Emaki).

Nintendo released the SNES Classic Edition in the West on September 29. The mini version of the 90s-era console comes with two controllers. The release includes Star Fox 2, which was created during the SNES era but never released.
