The film uses the famous "Sukiyaki", sung by the late Kyū Sakamoto, as one of its insert songs.

The show that Sora and Riku were watching had a male character that may be Kyu Sakamoto, singer of Sukiyaki. The song in the background was Sukiyaki and the anime takes place around 1963, two years after the song was released in Japan.

The word "Ghibli" can be seen in Yoshio's ship.

Although the movie takes place in 1963, the "Coke" sign over the store (at around 6 mins) has a swoosh. That didn't become part of the Coca-Cola logo until 1969.
