Trivia:

Based on a 1989 children's book written by the director Shigeru Tamura.

Episode 3 was later expanded into a 22 minute short film called Kujira no Chōyaku - Glassy Ocean (1998), which won the 1998 Japan Media Arts Festival grand prize for animation. A similar fishing scene is included in the film, but the campfire scene is only in episode 3.

Altair is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila (Latin for eagle), the twelfth brightest star in the night sky, and one of the closest stars visible to the naked eye. It also forms the asterism known as the "Summer Triangle" with the stars Vega and Deneb. The word "Altair" is shortened from an Arabic phrase "al-nasr al-tair" meaning "the flying eagle". The star serves as the location for a popular tavern featured in episode 11.

In episode 14, the two protagonists from Ginga no Sakana - URSA minor BLUE (1993), Yuri and his grandfather, are watching the news report as part of the audience. They are sitting in the back row: an elderly bearded man dressed in black and a little boy next to him.
