The main character's name is Machiko Ryou (町子リョウ). Her surname, Machiko, literally means city child and is a reference to the fact that she lives in the city. Her first name, Ryou, is a pun on the Japanese word “ryouri” (料理) which means cooking and is a reference to her great cooking skills.
The full name of Ryou's cousin is Morino Kirin (森野きりん). Her surname, Morino, literally means forest field and is a reference to the fact the she lives in the countryside. Her first name, Kirin, is a pun on the Japanese work “kirin” (麒麟) which means giraffe and is meant as a joke since she is quite short for her age and often mistaken as a primary school child.
