The first Lupin III TV special to not be written by Hiroshi Kashiwabara.

Junpei Takaguchi's first role in a Lupin anime in 9 years.

This TV special was premiered during the 400th anniversary of Goemon Ishikawa’s reported death.

The kabuki play in which Goemon attends in the opening is “The Golden Gate and the Paulownia Crest (Kinmon Gosan no Kiri), a 1778 play by Namiki Gohei. The scene that was depicted in the play is the “Temple Gate” act in which Goemon claims the springtime view from the top of the Nanzen-ji temple’s sanmon gate is worth far more than what others claim.

The stealth bomber Chin builds is based on the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, and when this special premiered; the B-2 Spirit was the U.S. military’s hot new stealth aircraft. It received a lot of media attention at the time because of how it deflected and absorbed radar signals and could make bombing run undetected. It’s quite likely that the public awareness and news stories about it contributed to its inclusion.

The fighter jets that the Navy tried to to use to take down Chin’s bomber were F-14 Tomcats.

Gensai’s shadow technique used on Goemon is the fabled and improbable shinobi art of “shadow-stitching”.

The plot of the TV special bears similarities to the plot in episode 7 of the first Lupin TV series. Which it too was about pursuing an item that describes how to forge a Zantetsuken like blade.

One of the multiple antagonists in this TV special, “Tsuge no Gensai” has a very old school Japanese name that doesn’t translate well; its literal meaning is along the lines of “Illusory Worship of Boxwood”. Boxwood Gensai’s affiliation with the Hattori name is another matter. Hanzo Hattori (nicknamed “Demon Hanzo” for his bold strategies) is credited with saving the life of Ieyasu Tokugawa, to whom he pledged his allegiance. Hanzo reportedly worked with the Iga ninja clan later in his career. Goemon was affiliated with the Iga ninja in episode 21 of Lupin III part 2.

The biplane Lupin pilots is similar to the biplane Lupin and Jigen commandeer in episode 145 of Lupin III part 2.
