Production on this movie began as early as 1982, in which its intention was to be a big-budget showcase of Tokyo Movie Shinsha Co.'s animation style towards American audiences. The efforts to make this movie appealing towards both Japanese and American audiences resulted in the movie having a long and troubled production history, as different personal of production involving with the writing, casting, & animation received conflicting instructions as to how to proceed with the movie.
Due to his unethical caricature, the Imp was the only character from the original Little Nemo comic strip to be omitted from this movie.
Morpheus, king of Slumberland was named after the Greek god of dreams.
Nemo’s pet flying squirrel Icarus was a movie exclusive character who didn’t originate from the original Little Nemo comic strip.
