"Ri" is an old Japanese form of measurement. One ri is equal to four kilometers. Therefore, Marco traveled 12,000 kilometers in search of his mother.
This story is referenced in the manga and anime Azumanga Daioh. Yukari rescues a stray kitten and takes it into her classroom so her students can decide what to do with it. One of the girls, Sakaki, thinks to herself that the cat is named "Marco" and is searching for his mother.
3000 ri was one of Isao Takahata's earliest credits as tv-series general director, and remains one of his most well known critically acclaimed works. His most ever popular and famous tv series are probably 3000 Ri, Heidi, Anne of Green Gables, and the virtual anthem of Japan's Kansai region, Jarinko Chie. The "Ri" of the Japanese title, Haha Wo Tazunete Sanzen Ri, is an antiquated nautical measure of distance; one ri is equivalent to 2.44 miles; "ri" thus becomes "league."
