In episode 1, during the sequence involving the delinquents wondering why everyone is interested in a Junior Boxing tournament, original creator Masami Kurumada makes a cameo. At first, he's drawn in the comical style of the main character of his parody manga Jitsuroku! Shinwakai, who shares Kurumada's name and even wears a shash that says "Shinwakai", but when declaring that a "real man" is in the arena Kurumada is drawn in his more traditional style. This is also Kurumada's first & only performance in an anime.
In episode 7, when Ishimatsu is confronted by some bullies while visiting his hometown & is forced into a fight, he is assisted by professional wrestling legend Yuji Nagata. In the anime, Nagata is portrayed as the junior wrestling champion; since Nagata was born in 1968 and this part of Ring ni Kakero 1 takes place in 1980 this portrayal makes sense for the most part.
