You Are My Pet
きみはペット (Japanese)
Plot Summary:
Iwaya Sumire is "elite." Intelligent, well-educated, career-oriented, and doesn't take crap from anyone, she's an up-and-coming jornalist at a large newspaper firm. And everyone at her job hates her. Men don't like that she's indepentant and tall, women don't like that she's smart and strong. Her last boyfriend left her because of an inferiority complex. Then she finds Momo in a box on the side of the road. Real name, Goda Takeshi, Momo is a person, but after some begging on his part, she agrees to take him in as a pet. A REAL pet, who sleeps on the floor and is not allowed in Sumire's bedroom. By thinking of him as a pet, Sumire is able to open up to Momo in ways that she can never do with another person, and he becomes an unparalelled confidant. At the same time, Sumire must hide the fact that she's keeping a person as a pet from everyone she knows, including her nosy, no-pets-allowed landlord. The basic concept at the heart of the show is, what our pets might say if they could talk.
With a good education, a good job, intelligence, and good looks, Iwaya Sumire is an "elite" who seems to have it all. Tension builds up at her workplace as her achievements, her professional attitude, and her determination alienate her co-workers and her boyfriend, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she finds a young man in a box outside her apartment building. She looks after him, and even allows him to stay with her, on the condition that he become Momo, her "pet", being cared for but having no human rights. Soon after, an old flame that she's still smitten with returns to Japan and is showing interest in her, but her "pet" is also starting to demand more attention, as the bond between them becomes stronger. Sumire is a strong, modern Japanese woman caught in between society's expectations of womanhood, her own ideals about love relationships, and the reality of her feelings. Ultimately, she must decide what sort of love she is looking for and what sort of person she can be.
