Trivia:

The Opening Theme of AWOL, "Rocket Dive," was #4 on the Top 10 list when it debuted in Japan. The singer of the song, hide, was one of Japan's most beloved singers, and even has a museum section devoted to his life.

AWOL was so infamous for its pacing issues that when it was released on VHS & LD in Japan it was re-edited with a faster pace & released under the 4-volume "AWOL COMPRESSION Re-MIX" name. Oddly enough, when AnimeVillage.com licensed the show for North American distribution they ended up releasing the original 12-episode TV version across 6 VHS tapes!
