Plot Summary: In a fishing village on a remote Japanese island, a fisherman named Shinji falls in love with a beautiful pearl-diver named Hatsue, and she with him. However, Shinji is poor, while Hatsue is the daughter of the richest man on the island. Hatsue's father only wants a son-in-law who will add to the (already considerable) family finances, so he doesn't approve of Shinji at all. The situation only gets worse when the villagers start to gossip and spread rumors about the two of them.
