The 'astronomer' near the start of episode 1 is wearing a t-shirt with the logo of Red Dwarf, the long-running British sci-fi comedy TV show. He is, of course, not really an astronomer but a voyeur, as can be seen from his view of Pachira's panchira, which is not inverted but the right way up. Astronomical telescopes normally produce inverted images, but his is fitted with the (aptly-named) erecting lens and is therefore intended for terrestrial rather than astronomical use.
The scenes and general tone of the OP bear little relationship to the show itself, and hint at dark goings-on occurring before the first episode when the princesses were still in the Netherworld.
Pachira's nosebleeds towards the end of episode 7 may or may not be a reference to Karin from the anime "Karin".
