Takashi TACHIBANA, who played Shizuku's father, is a famous journalist, not a voice actor. Just as his character, he loves to investigate local history and is a non-fiction writer.
Watch the end credits carefully. One of the sidestories, which isn't brought to a conclusion in the main film, is concluded in the animation over the credits.
The grandfather clock the old man winds in the Chikyuuya shop has "Porco Rosso" engraved on its face. Porco Rosso is another film directed by Miyazaki Hayao.
There is a toy of Kiki hanging in Shizuku's room at the beginning of the film.
About half-way through the movie a few young children can be seen walking down a sidewalk. Among them are Seita and Setsuka from "Grave of the Fireflies" (another Studio Ghibli film). Seita with his trademark hat in a white tee and Setsuka carrying her blue patterned handkerchief.
Around 00:07:00, in the school library there is a Totoro book just below the book she takes out (a reference to a previous Ghibli movie)
