The manga Kaguya Hime borrows from the 10th century Japanese folk tale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" (竹取物語; Taketori Monogatari) about a mysterious girl, Princess Kaguya. The tale is also known as "The Legend of Princess Kaguya" (かぐや姫の物語; Kaguya-hime no Monogatari) and sometimes translated as "The Legend of the Bamboo Harvester".
