Chronology:
(1941) His family was incarcerated at an internment camp in Arkansas when he was 4 years old. He learned to recite The Pledge of Allegiance while surrounded by guard towers and barbed-wire fences.
(1945) Left the Arkansas camp at age 8.
(1984) Took part in the Los Angeles Olympic Torch Relay.
(1994) Takei was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Fourth Class from Emperor Akihito, for his work in improving Japanese-U.S. relations.
(1996) Became the first "Star Trek" (1966) actor to go to a South American convention, in São Paulo, Brazil.
(2005) He announced to the public that he was gay.
(2008-09-14) He & his partner Brad Altman got married after being together for 21 years. After the California Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage in May of that same year. He & his partner were among the first gay couples to get a marriage license.
(2009-10-13) Him and Brad made television history when they became the first gay couple to be invited to appear on The Newlywed Game, the long-running show now airing on GSN cable network. They won the game, earning a $10,000 donation for the Japanese American National Museum.
