Daily Video: Hideki Ohwada Sketches Legend of Koizumi

posted on by Gia Manry
Manga creator draws former Japanese Prime Minister using calligraphy pen

In the above video which was posted yesterday, manga creator Hideki Ohwada draws the main character of The Legend of Koizumi (Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku), an over-the-top version of former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Ohwada typically draws his manga digitally, but here he uses a fudepen (a calligraphy brush pen whose ink is usable on normal paper, whereas traditional calligraphy ink only works on rice paper).

In the political parody of The Legend of Koizumi, Koizumi plays a special form of "mahjong diplomacy" against foreign adversaries such as George W. Bush, Kim Jong-il, Vladimir Putin, Margaret Thatcher, and others. Prior to working on The Legend of Koizumi, Ohwada drew the 2002 magical girl parody manga Great Magical Gap, which was adapted into the original video anime (OVA) Magical Witch Punie-chan. He has also been drawing the parody manga Kidō Senshi Gundam-san since 2005.

Manga translator and Japanese in Mangaland author Marc Bernabé produced this video as part of his Masters of Manga website and video series.
