White Canvas Site Responds to Touhou Project Creator's Allegations

Site: Korindo company misunderstands current consignment sales contract terms

The White Canvas website representative Yuji Suzuki has responded to the Touhou Project dōjin game creator's blog announcement that pulled the website's right to sell goods related to the series. "Team Shanghai Alice," the creator also known as ZUN and CEO of Korindo Inc., claimed last Tuesday that White Canvas made and sold Touhou Project items without payment or permission.

Suzuki responded that White Canvas has been complying with production and payment agreements as listed in a consignment contract made with ZUN in 2007. He also stated that White Canvas received a message in October 2010 that copyright affairs for ZUN's productions had been transferred to the Korindo board member Fumio Oyamada. Korindo then attempted to form a new commercialization contract with White Canvas, according to Suzuki. Because the proposed contract differed greatly from the 2007 agreement and was unacceptable to White Canvas, the companies never finalized it. As a result, the website believed the former contract with ZUN was still valid and continued to abide its terms. White Canvas feels that ZUN's resulting allegations arose from Korindo's misunderstanding of the above situation.

The dōjinshi game maker Twilight Frontier (Tasogare Frontier) also told ZUN before his blog post that White Canvas was not paying for its consignment sales. White Canvas revealed that it has a pending lawsuit against SUNFISH Co., Ltd., the managing company for Tasogare Frontier. Suzuki said that SUNFISH's president Tomohiko Nakajima is also a Korindo board member, and White Canvas feels that this legal situation may have impacted ZUN's announcement that he suspended the website's right to sell Touhou Project goods.

ZUN announced at August's Comic Market 80 event that he allowed White Canvas to sell the franchise's 13th official game, Touhou Shinreibyou ~Ten Desires —, starting in September. In the company's recent statement, White Canvas said that it will make an effort to continue offering ZUN's works in the future.
