Pokémon Emerald's Rayquaza wins contest marking 15th anniversary of game franchise

The official website for the Pokémon franchise announced the winners on Friday of the Rekidai Game Pokémon Sōsenkyō! (Generations of Games: Pokémon General Election!) contest. Pokémon Emerald's Rayquaza won the most votes for the most popular Pokémon to appear on the cover art of 15 games.

The full results of the contest were as follows:

Rank Pokémon Game Cover
1 Rayquaza Pokémon Emerald
2 Pikachu Pokémon Yellow (Pikachu)
3 Reshiram Pokémon Black
4 Giratina Pokémon Platinum
5 Suicune Pokémon Crystal Version
6 Groudon Pokémon Ruby
7 Charizard Pokémon Red
8 Zekrom Pokémon White
9 Kyogre Pokémon Sapphire
10 Lugia Pokémon Silver
11 Dialga Pokémon Diamond
12 Ho-Oh Pokémon Gold
13 Palkia Pokémon Pearl
14 Blastoise Pokémon Blue
15 Venusaur Pokémon Green

The Pokémon Company held the contest from November 12 to December 25 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first Pokémon game. A 100-level Rayquaza will be given as a free present to fans in the Japanese DS edition of the Pokémon: Black and White games from February 10-27.

The contest was patterned after the "general elections" made popular by the all-female idol group AKB48.
