This Boy Can Fight Aliens!' Soubi Yamamoto draws This Boy Picked Up a Merman's lead character

CoMix Wave Films began streaming a video of This Boy Can Fight Aliens! anime creator Soubi Yamamoto drawing the lead character Shima from her latest work, Kono Danshi, Ningyo Hiroimashita. (This Boy Picked Up a Merman). She drew the sketch on the last day of the Machi Asobi Vol. 9 event in Tokushima on Monday.

The November 19 video anime follows a high school boy named Shima Kawauchi who is wrapped in his own grief. On the day he loses his grandfather, he goes to the beach to cry by himself and almost drowns when he slips. He is rescued by a beautiful young man named Isaki — who happens to be a merman.

Yūki Kaji and Hikaru Midorikawa star in the anime as Shima and Isaki, respectively, and Midorikawa also sings the theme song "Umi yori Aoku" (Bluer Than the Sea).

As a 21-year-old, Yamamoto made her scriptwriting and directorial debut last year with the first 28-minute Kono Danshi anime, Kono Danshi, Uchū-jin to Tatakaemasu. (This Boy Can Fight Aliens!). Her first anime had its international premiere at New York Comic Con last October, and Sentai Filmworks licensed it for North America.
