Auditions for Princess Mononoke Stage Play

Roles will be "unpaid and voluntary"; theatre company hopes that performance dates will be extended.

The Whole Hog Theatre company has announced there will be auditions for voluntary (unpaid) actors in its upcoming stage adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. The sign-up page will open on Thursday October 25 and will operate on a first-come first-served basis. More details below.

As well as the auditions, the theatre has also posted a call-out for the following staff positions: Set Designer, Costume Designer, Technical Manager/Lighting Designer, Stage Manager and Hair and Makeup Design. Again, these positions will be voluntary. According to the site, "all levels of experience are relevant; candidates are chosen based on their demonstration of talent and commitment, and not necessarily on previous credits/professional experience." Appplicants for these positions (not the auditions) should send a portfolio or CV to [email protected], along with a covering letter explaining why the applicant wants to join the production.

The Princess Mononoke play has been developed in cooperation with Studio Ghibli. The stage performances will feature giant puppets made from recycled materials, as well as original live music.

The play sold out within 72 hours of its announcement. It is due to be performed at London's New Diorama Theatre from April 2 to April 6, 2013. However, the new message mentions that "We very much hope to take the production further over the rest of 2013."

From the Whole Hog Theatre website regarding the auditions:

The roles will be unpaid and voluntary (as are all roles within Whole Hog Theatre). Those who wish to audition need to sign up for a slot via this online form; this will go live at 8am this coming Thursday (25th October). Please do not try and sign up before this time as your application will not be counted and you will have to reapply from 8am on Thursday. Applications can only be submitted through this form and should not be emailed in.

The closing date will be Friday 9th November, but we are expecting a great deal of interest and will be operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

We will be holding three full days of first round auditions:

Thursday 22nd November – New Diorama Theatre, London

Friday 23rd November – The Band Factory, Leamington Spa

Saturday 24th November – Warwick University Campus, Coventry

All auditionees must memorise and perform a 30 second monologue of their choice and participate in a short physical workshop for the first round auditions. Please come dressed appropriately.

Any other information that you will need, including detailed directions on how to get to your chosen venue, will be emailed to you with the confirmation of your successful sign up, along with the time of your slot.

Please note that all recall auditions (two rounds) will be held the following week on Warwick University Campus, Coventry.

Should you be cast, all rehearsals will be on Warwick University campus, so cast members need to be able to commute easily, or relocate to the Leamington or Coventry areas. As this is an unpaid opportunity rehearsals would be part-time (weekday evenings and weekend rehearsals) but time commitment would increase in the run up to production week. Rehearsals will begin in earnest at the beginning of January, but R&D sessions will be happening the first three weekends of December for those who do not need to relocate or are based locally.

Confirmed production dates are the 2nd - 6th April 2013 at The New Diorama Theatre, London, but we very much hope to take this production further over the rest of 2013; please bear this in mind when choosing to audition.
