End of MMORPG's current incarnation shown; revamp's beta to run January-February

The official Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel began streaming a trailer to depict the end of the massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) in its current form — and to usher in the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn revamp.

The current incarnation of Final Fantasy XIV is going offline on Sunday with plans to migrate players over to A Realm Reborn. Square Enix announced in August and September that the new version's server-load tests and alpha testing would begin this winter, and the company is already recruiting testers on Windows PCs.

Square Enix revealed in the "Final Fantasy XIV Letter from the Producer Live Part IV" web program on Sunday that the beta test will then run from late January to early February. The company will announce a new roadmap for the revamp between late November and early December; producer/director Naoki Yoshida indicated that the revamp has been delayed by about 10 weeks from the roadmap that Square Enix announced in September.
