Konami Greenlights Fan Remake of Metal Gear

Outer Heaven recreates classic action game using Steam game Alien Swarm

It's been almost 27 years since the very first Metal Gear was released by Konami for the MSX2 computer standard. Since then, it has released numerous games staring its iconic protagonist, Solid Snake. In honor of this legendary video game series, a team of fans is working together to make a remake of the original Metal Gear game. What makes this fan project extra special is the fact that they have actually gotten official approval from Konami to continue its development.

Calling themselves "The Outer Heaven," the group is planning on creating their remake as a mod of the shoot-em-up game Alien Swarm, available through Steam. The group posted the game's official synopsis on its Mod DB webpage:

The year is 1995, 200 miles north of Galzburg, South Africa. Here, an armed forces nation calling itself "Outer Heaven" had declared itself an independent nation. What caught the eyes of the rest of the world was the rumor that a new type of weapon was under construction here.

To remedy the situation, a special forces unit named "FOX-Hound" under the command of Big Boss, named the greatest warrior who ever lived, was called upon. Big Boss sent the unit's best man- Gray FOX, the codename "FOX", being given to the best member in the unit. However after a while, Gray FOX stopped reporting in, his last message being simply "Metal Gear.." Under increasing pressure, Big Boss sent another member of the unit, the newly appointed Solid Snake.

However, it seems that the approval comes with a slight condition. The Outer Heaven project is only legally allowed to continue beyond this point so long as they agree not to make any money off of the remake of the game. Since the approval, "The Outer Heaven" has announced that they will be looking for volunteers to help with level design, texture art, modeling, voice acting, and music.

While the official page of the project says that they have ceased development, Anime News Network confirmed with Outer Heaven that the project is still underway. You can keep up-to-date with them by checking out their official Mod DB page.
