Artists and Fans Celebrate Setsubun With Illustrations

posted on by Bamboo Dong

Setsubun is celebrated every year the day before spring. Of the many customs is Mamemaki, the throwing of roasted soybeans (fuku mame, or fortune beans) out a door, or at someone wearing a demon mask. The beans drive away any evil spirits that reside in the home, ushering in a year of good luck and good health. In the anime world, the oni is often drawn as Urusei Yatsura's Lum, which is why you'll see so much Lum fanart around this time. Another custom is the eating of makizushi, uncut maki rolls, while facing that year's lucky direction. While this custom originated in the Kansai region, over the years, it's spread in popularity, and now many sushi and convenience store chains will sell Setsubun makizushi.

We've compiled some of the Setsubun art drawn by mangaka, illustrators, animators, and fans alike.
