Giant Look-alike of Gundam's Zaku Rises in Turkey

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Turkey's capital of Ankara has a familiar looking mecha on its streets. A recent statue that looks quite similar to the iconic Zaku was built out of bronze at a city intersection. Ankara's mayor, Melih Gökçek, approved the statue to promote a local theme park. There have since been complaints that the theme park violates city planning ordinances, so the court has issued an injunction. Regardless, Mayor Gökçek is pretty enthusiastic about the project.

The Floraland (Chengdu Guosetianxiang) Park housed a 15-meter-tall orange statue that closely resembled the first Gundam mobile suit robot. The park responded to criticism about the statue by stating that it was not a Gundam copy, then denying its existence, and finally modifying the statue.
