Hajime Isayama Draws Attack on Titan Voice Actors as In-Series Characters

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama is actually pretty new to the manga and anime scene, with the runaway hit franchise being his only notable work out of just three total published properties.

The giant-people-eating-regular-sized-people anime and manga series has been met with wide praise and has over 40 million copies in print. But being a fresh new kid bursting onto the scene has earned Isayama criticism – including from Gundam mastermind Yoshiyuki Tomino. Tomino commented on Isayama's drawing ability, with Tomino dismissing it as "crude." He followed up the comment commending Isayama for practicing his art further by using models.

Isayama did, in fact, attend "anime school" at the Kyushu Designer Gakuin, where he no doubt learned at least the basics of figure drawing. So, when a group of cosplayers sent Isayama a photo of them striking silly poses in Survey Corps' jackets, Isayama squeezed in some drawing practice by illustrating them.

They weren't just any cosplayers, though. The Eren cosplayer is none other than his anime voice actor counterpart Yūki Kaji, flanked by Armin's Marina Inoue and Mikasa's Yui Ishikawa. The picture was taken at a recent cast stage greeting for the Shingeki no Kyojin Kōhen: Jiyū no Tsubasa compilation film.
