Japan's Latest Culinary Concoctions: A Wet Burger and Lemon-Mint Soda

Salute Istanbul and improve excretion

Even familiar foods can take on unexpected twists in the Land of the Rising Sun, and the hamburger is no exception. MOS Burger, a Japanese fast food chain, has unveiled a wet burger as its latest menu item. Inspired by the islak burger sold in Istanbul, its bun is soaked in a sweet-yet-spicy tomato sauce ("Napolitan sauce," a kind of pasta sauce invented in Japan). The burger comes with a slice of cheese and the buns use white bread with rice, like other MOS burgers. The wet burger will be available for 280 yen ($2.26) for a limited time in Tokyo and nearby Kanagawa Prefecture beginning on August 3.

SUNTORY, meanwhile, is exploring ways to offer customers healthier products. Its new "Tokuho" line (from the Japanese phrase "special healthy food products") aims to "suppress the absorption of fat and increase excretion." The first item to be announced is Pepsi Special, which includes indigestible dextrin, a fiber that eases the rise of neutral fats in the bloodstream. Its flavor is lemon-mint. It is available now in 490-mL (about 16.5 ounces) bottles for 150 yen ($1.20).

Among other unusual burger creations, McDonald's offered Japanese customers a black burger for Halloween last year. Pepsi has also offered strange flavors in Japan before, including strawberry milk.
