Shake Your Booty to the Noragami Dance

posted on by Eric Stimson
Venerate Yato while getting some exercise

Like any proper god, Yato of Noragami needs a festival to celebrate and worship him. The Geidankyo Building in Shinjuku, Tokyo, will hold such a festival on the weekend of October 3 and 4, where fans of the anime can get Noragami merchandise, play a mystery game, and watch a sneak preview of the show's upcoming second season, Noragami Aragoto. They also get to dance!

Ondo are folk dances often performed at Japanese festivals to get visitors in high spirits and bring the community together on the dance floor. They may reference the local industry or celebrate a certain god or spirit. The Noragami Ondo celebrates Yato, of course, and includes lyrics about picking up a discarded god and a chorus on matchmaking. (Hence the extended pinky fingers, a reference to a belief in a red string of fate tied to a couple's pinky fingers.)

The festival is holding a campaign encouraging fans to record their own takes on the Noragami Ondo and send in their videos. The best ones will be featured on their site. The campaign lasts until October 31, so if you like to dance or just want to make a goofy video, upload it onto YouTube, fill out this form, and maybe you could be a hit at the festival.

Noragami is not unusual in having its own ondo; other anime have been given them, including Pokemon and Tamayura.
