The Wind Rises Manga Features Characters as Pigs

posted on by Eric Stimson
New edition to be published October 8

On October 8, Dai Nippon Kaiga will publish Hayao Miyazaki's manga The Wind Rises in a collection entitled Kaze Tachinu: Miyazaki Hayao no Mōsō Comeback (The Wind Rises: Hayao Miyazaki's Delusional Comeback). It was originally published in 2009 and 2010 in Model Graphix, a model hobbyist magazine, and adapted into an award-winning film in 2013. The main difference from its adaptation is that the main characters are drawn as pigs. Miyazaki explained in an interview for Bungeishunjū magazine that he "drew it according to my interests."

The collection will also feature an article about Kirō Honjō, the designer of the Mitsubishi G3M, who is a minor character in the story. It also includes additional information about the airplanes Jirō Horikoshi designed and photos of models of them.

Hayao Miyazaki's 1992 film, Porco Rosso, also depicts the main character as a porcine aviator. Together, these two works suggest that the old adage "when pigs fly" might not be so far-fetched after all.
