Director Guillermo del Toro Happily Surprised About Ultraman X's Planet Guillermo
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro's unabashed love for Japanese culture is no secret. After making his giant robot film, del Toro was seen sight-seeing in Odaiba to check out the island's giant Gundam and Warner Bros. gave him copies of Madoka Magica. He was even collaborating with Hideo Kojima and horror manga juggernaut Junji Ito on the now defunct Silent Hills video game project.
Japanese copies have taken notice of the award-winning director's love for their pop culture. Specifically, tokusatsu series producer Tsuburaya. The latest entry of its staple franchise, Ultraman X is currently airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll. The director, and long-time fan, noticed in episode 5 that the heroes battle on a suspiciously named planet.
Can someone confirm 100% that X and Z fight in "Planet Guillermo"? I get teary-eyed. https://t.co/rHvuRegfno

Tsuburaya Productions replied (in English) that it's true, Ultraman X and Zero visit "Planet Guillermo." del Toro previously confessed his love for the franchise in a Japanese interview a few years ago.
Since Silent Hills fell through this year, del Toro is working on keeping hope alive for a sequel to Pacific Rim and his proposed live-action Monster adaptation.
