Golgo 13 Creator Draws James Bond to Celebrate New Film

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Once upon a time, Golgo 13 creator Takao Saitō drew Hollywood's arguably most iconic spy. It was just two years shy of four decades ago, but James Bond was the star of his own manga on top of actually landing in Japan for You Only Live Twice. That was the film where Sean Connery was passed off as Japanese as part of the plot.

Saito didn't take on the film's scenario, but instead was given the rights to adapt Ian Fleming's Thunderball, The Man with the Golden Gun, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Live and Let Die novels before he dreamt up assassin Duke Togo.

Despite the long break, Saito returned to draw 007 in honor of this year's film, Spectre. The character design is still based on Fleming's original character, although the eyebrows look similar to Connery.

Publisher Shogakukan is reprinting the manga volumes as well. The first three volumes are currently on sale and On Her Majesty's Secret Service is slated for December 28.

The January issue of Shueisha's Jump SQ. magazine published a short "manga trailer" for Spectre earlier this month.
