Pikachu Parade Splashes Through Yokohama Despite Summer Heat

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Crowds gathered in Yokohama on Sunday to kickoff the annual "Pikachū Tairyō Hassei-chū" in the Yokohama Minato Mirai mall area on Sunday. Lines of fans withstood 90-degree heat to catch a glimpse of the dancing Pikachus, stilt-walkers, and parade floats. Each year, hundreds of giant Pikachu gather in the district to dance their tails off. This year the theme is “This Time We'll Be Getting Wet???” with the promise of more than 1,000 Pikachu attending.

This week-long Pikachu-themed festival began in 2014 and has since become an annual summer event in Yokohama. Last year's "Dancing Pikachu Invasion," or "Odoru? Pikachū Tairyō Hassei-chū!" was incredibly popular.

The parade Pikachu also visited the set of the Pokémon no Uchi Atsumaru? (Let's Meet Up at the Pokémon House?) television program to raise awareness for the event.
