your name.'s Trailer Gets Reworked Into Horror Film

posted on by Eric Stimson
"Wherever you are in the world, I'm going to go and see you... NO MATTER WHAT"

your name. tells the tale of two seemingly ordinary youngsters who switch bodies in their dreams and become determined to meet each other in real life. It is very sentimental and romantic, like Makoto Shinkai's other films, but also has an optimistic, hopeful tone. But could its premise have been used for a horror story instead? @nobu_llllllllll reworked your name.'s trailer on Twitter, demonstrating both how unsettling the premise is and how easily editing and scoring can influence our perceptions.

First, here is the original trailer, with translated dialogue for reference:

Boy: I've been searching for something for a while.
Text: A high school boy who lives in the heart of the city - Taki
Text: A girl who lives in the boonies - Mitsuha
Mitsuha: Oh, don't tell me...
Taki: We switched places...
Mitsuha and Taki: ...in our dreams?!
Text: Their bodies switched places.
Mitsuha: The guys are starting! I've gotta watch out for my skirt.
Taki: Um, Mitsuha...
Text: The switched up daily life of two people who would never have met each other.
Taki: Don't mess with my relationships, alright?
Taki: That girl!
Mitsuha: That guy!
Woman: You're dreaming right now.
Text: The dream that they should have seen.
Operator Voice: The number you have dialed is out of the coverage area...
Taki: What did I just...
Mitsuha: If we don't do anything, everyone will die tonight.
Yotsuba: Mitsuha, you're acting funny!
Taki: What did you think of what he said?
Taki: No. It wasn't a dream.
Text: A story of a miraculous day when the stars fell.
Grandmother: Dreams eventually disappear when you wake up.
Miki: I liked it.
Taki: Back then, you...
Mitsuha: Back then, I...
Text: I'm searching for you...
Taki: Don't worry. I'm sure we'll make it.
Text: Who I've never met.
Taki: Mitsuha!
Mitsuha: I can't remember his name!
Boy: You're the one that started this!
Taki: I had been thinking to tell you that wherever you are in the world, I'm going to go and see you no matter what!
Mitsuha: Who is he?
Taki: Someone I don't want to forget.
Mitsuha: Someone I didn't want to forget.
Taki: Someone I couldn't ever forget.
Mitsuha: Your name...
Taki: Your name!
Taki: The scene looked like something out of a dream.
Mitsuha: And it was truly...
Taki and Mitsuha: Something to behold.

Here is @nobu_llllllllll's version:

Taki: I've been searching for something for a while.
Operator Voice: The number you have dialed is out of the coverage area...
Taki: What did I just...
Mitsuha: If we don't do anything, everyone will die tonight.
Woman: You're dreaming right now.
Text: Who are you?
Taki: That day, when the stars fell, was almost like...
Text: I am from one of your past-past-past lives.
Mitsuha: The scene looked like something out of a dream.
Taki and Mitsuha: It was something to behold.
Text: And I've started searching for you.
Text on Taki's arm: Don't get cocky!
Yotsuba: Mitsuha, you're acting funny!
Text: Mitsuha
Text: Wherever you are in the world... I'm going to go and see you no matter what.
Taki: No. It wasn't a dream.

The edit suggests that the movie isn't even about body-switching anymore, yet the dream connection remains... in a much more sinister context. The new trailer struck a chord with Japanese fans, garnering 85,000 retweets and over 20,000 views on Nico Nico Douga.

your name. itself, meanwhile, has struck a chord with Japanese audiences as well. It has earned 10 billion yen (about $99 million) at the box office, a record for an anime film unassociated with Studio Ghibli. This intake tops what both Frozen and Ponyo made in an equivalent amount of time. According to the director, "This box office revenue is not exactly proportional to my own ability... I don't have 10 billion yen worth of merit."
