Saekano's Megumi Manages Your Life as Smartphone App

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Starting this fall, you'll be able to have Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend's Megumi Katō as a personal assistant on your phone. Megumi will feature in the "voice interactive agent" app Main Heroine Katō Megumi for Android devices.

Megumi: Yeah, yeah. It's OK. Go ahead and do as you like.

Sony Communications unveiled the app on Thursday. Sony developed the app from the concept of an alarm clock manager that combines an anime character with the company's interactive technology and leading voice synthesis technology.

Megumi (voiced by Kiyono Yasuno) wakes people up at the designated time in the app. She then reports the day's weather and the user's schedule. Toshiba utilized its synthetic sound software to adapt about 600 sentences that Yasuno recorded for the app. Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend light novel creator Fumiaki Maruto supervised the project, and Sony integrated his original scenario.

Kurehito Misaki's original illustrations become 4K images and transform Megumi into a high-resolution Live 2D model. The app includes a "Mood Barometer" and a "Game Scenario for Only Two People" monthly event function.

The app was displayed as the "Katō Megumi Project" alarm clock app at events such as AnimeJapan and Contents Tokyo earlier this year.

The beta version of the app will launch on November 11, and a free full version will launch at a later date. Pre-registration is already available on the app's official website. Fans will be able to try a demo version of the game at the Fantasia Bunko Dai-Kanshasai 2016 event at Tokyo's Bellesalle Akihabara on Saturday. The app Megumi's sleeping mode will be displayed on a 75-inch 4K Bravia television at the event.

The original light novels and the anime revolve around Tomoya Aki, an otaku who is working part-time to earn enough money to buy anime on Blu-ray Disc, who meets a beautiful girl on his way home during spring vacation. He eventually models the heroine of his own dōjin game after her. However, he finds out a month later that the girl is in fact his classmate, and he doesn't know her name. He learns that the girl — named Megumi — actually is hardly noticed by others. Tomoya also has no artistic ability or writing skills, so he asks ace of the art club Eriri Spencer Sawamura to provide the art, as well as the honor student Utaha Kasumigaoka to write the scenario. Can they produce a decent game for Comic Market?

The first season of the anime premiered in January 2015, and a sequel is slated to premiere in April 2017.
