Haikyu's Hinata Takes on Shin Godzilla

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Can Hideaki Anno's take on TOHO's infamous monster be defeated by Karasuno's shrimpy decoy? Haikyuu!! creator Haruichi Furudate pitted the aspiring volleyball player against Godzilla in a collaborative illustration in this week's double issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. In this version, Hinata isn't so small and is instead being "piloted" by the team's setter, Kageyama. Furudate has previously produced action and spy movie poster style illustrations.

Furudate also confessed that he is a fan of the Godzilla film series. He wrote in the issue's table of contents comment section, "They said it was OK to draw Godzilla, so I drew it! Thanks! Unmanned train bomb!!" [Train bombs were used to fight Godzilla in the film].

The illustration will also be on display at the TOHO animation booth at Jump Festa 2017 which will be held at Makuhari Messe on December 17-18.

Manga artists and popular illustrators have come out of the woodwork to show their love of Godzilla. Manga artist Kazuhiko Shimamoto's Shin Godzilla dōjin was a hit at this summer's Comiket. Artists Yuji Kaida, Takashi Murakami, Shinji Nishikawa, Akira Amemiya, Rockin'Jelly Bean, SHIRONAGASU WORKS, Moyoco Anno, Yurie Sekiya, Yurushito, and Hidetaka Tenjin have all contributed artwork for the film.
