'Blue Butler,' 'Black Exorcist' Characters Swap Outfits in Dreams

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

In Japan, the tradition of hatsuyume (first dream) encourages people to interpret their first dream of the new year to discover how the next 365 days will treat them. Due to spending the night of December 31 taking part in traditions like hatsumōde (first shrine/temple visit) and hatsuhinode (first sunrise), many Japanese people traditionally experience this dream on the night of January 1. Dreaming of Mount Fuji, hawks, and eggplants is especially fortuitous.

Although they didn't dream of Japan's tallest mountain, a smart bird, or an auspicious fruit, Kuro from Blue Exorcist and Ciel from Black Butler shared their dreams on January 1. It makes sense that these two characters had related dreams. Kuro's name means "black" in Japanese, and Ciel's name is associated with the color blue because it means "sky" in French. Each character was destined to dream about the anime with their color in the title.

In Kuro's first dream of the year, Blue Exorcist's Rin dresses as Black Butler's Sebastian. Rin's twin brother Yukio wears the clothes of Black Butler's Grell.

"Blue Butler"

Ciel's unconscious mind puts Sebastian in Rin's outfit, and the Grim Reaper Grell dons Yukio's traditional garb.

"Black Exorcist"

Unsurprisingly, these characters' amazingly coincidental dreams are actually the result of two productions collaborating to promote upcoming anime. The official websites for the Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga television anime and Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic anime film unveiled the collaboration on Sunday. The sites unveiled crossover images and original voice recordings for each of the four cosplaying characters. In variations on their catchphrases, the characters say:

Rin: I'm going to be the strongest butler!
Yukio: You're a fool, brother. Why would you say you want to become a butler?!

Sebastian: I'm one hell of an exorcist. (Alternately, "I'm a demon, and so I'm an exorcist."
Grell: I'm an exorcist to die for! (Alternately, "Even like this, I'm an exorcist!")

Promotional images for the black-and-blue campaign went up in the Tokyo Metro Shinjuku Station's Metro Promenade on Monday, and they will stay up until Sunday, January 8.

Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga will premiere on television in Japan on Friday, and Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic will open in theaters in Japan on January 21. Here are the characters in their usual outfits for their own anime:
