Recall Issued for Pokémon Batteries That Overheat, Smoke

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Some Pokémon fans who purchased portable batteries have been experiencing unexpected shocks (not caused by electric mice). The Pokémon Company and Nearby Direct Japan issued a voluntary recall on Thursday for Pikachu and Poké Ball mobile batteries that reportedly became abnormally hot and emitted smoke.

Nearby Direct's Pokémon-themed RAVPower 10050mAh batteries were sold at Pokémon Centers, Pokémon Stores, and in the Pokémon Center Online store for 2,808 yen (about US$24) from September 16 to February 13. The recall announcement cites "defective manufacturing processes" as the reason for the overheating and smoke. The companies are asking people who purchased the batteries to stop using them and return them to designated retailers for a refund.

Fans who want to enjoy safer Pikachu merchandise can purchase new beach, Easter, and cherry blossom goods in Japan. The Pikachu Yellow variant of the New Nintendo 3DS XL also shipped in North America on February 24.
