Kyoto Subway's Moe Girls Get Cafe, New Character

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The moe girls of the Get On! Kyoto City Subway campaign are getting their own cafe at the JR Kyoto Isetan department store on May 17-23. The cafe will offer an exclusive food and drink menu inspired by the characters, limited-edition merchandise, and a figure exhibit.

Here are the campaign's main characters holding their special cafe drinks:

Moe Uzumasa

Misa Ono

Saki Matsuga

Rei Uzumasa

The cafe will offer a food menu with items inspired by each of the campaign's four main characters. Moe's dishes are a cheese Hamburg steak (seen below), tomato and mozzarella caprese, and pizza with a whole tomato.

The moe characters are each getting their own non-alcoholic fruity cocktail. Moe's drink (seen below) is strawberry. Each drink will come with a character coaster.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the JR Kyoto Isetan department store, the Get On! Kyoto City Subway campaign is adding a new character for the store. She will debut on a display at the event.

A set of two clear files featuring all the characters will be available for purchase. The first 50 people to use the cafe every day will also receive original character tin badges.

The campaign's first male characters Ryō Ono and Takeru Jūjō debuted in October. Ryō is Misa's older brother and Takeru's friend. Ryō is also a design student at the same college that the Kyoto International Manga Museum promotional character Myu Karasuma attends.

The idea to use moe characters to promote Kyoto's subway system emerged in 2010, and Moe Uzumasa debuted as the project's first character in 2011. The Kyoto native and illustrator Kamogawa joined the campaign and created new character designs in 2013, and the Get On! Kyoto City Subway campaign launched that year.

Moe and her friends Misa and Saki have promoted Kyoto subways together since then. Moe's older sister Rei later joined their ranks. The characters appear on posters and special train tickets. The campaign collaborated with the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair and Kyoto Gakuen University (Moe has a cousin, Sono, who studies there). They even inspired the Kyoto Girls Days novel and an anime short.
