Samsung Licenses SmartBoy Phone Add-on to Play Game Boy Cartridges

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

It started as an April Fool's joke, but Hyperkin's Android phone add-on that allows users to play their Game Boy cartridges was just licensed by Samsung for use on its phones. The SmartBoy, which was previously limited to developer kits and marred by potential red tape now has a release window for the U.S. and South Korea.

The device is compatible with Samsung phones which feature a USB-Type C connections, including the recently released Samsung Galaxy S8. It's currently estimated to cost US$49.99 and will work with both Game Boy original and Game Boy Color games regardless of their release region. Hyperkin is planning to release the SmartBoy in either the second or third quarter of this year.
