Fukushima Gainax's Art Exhibition Honors Whisper of the Heart Director

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Anime studio Fukushima Gainax's "fantasy and art" museum Fukushima Sakura Yūgakusha is collaborating with Fukushima Chuo TV to hold the "Kono Otoko ga Ghibli o Sasaeta. Kondō Yoshifumi-ten" (This Man Supported Ghibli. Yoshifumi Kondō Exhibition) exhibit. The exhibition to honor animator Yoshifumi Kondō will run at the museum from June 3 to August 31.

Kondō was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1950, and he passed away in 1998. He directed Studio Ghibli's 1995 anime film Whisper of the Heart. Kondō also served as animation director and character designer for Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies, and Anne of Green Gables.

Studio Ghibli is collaborating on the exhibit to display many of Kondō's character designs, key frames, image boards, and sketches. The exhibition will feature Kondō's materials from Ghibli works such as Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, and Whisper of the Heart.

Studio Ghibli producer Chiyoshi Tanaka (Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart) will have a gallery talk tour after the exhibition's opening ceremony on June 3. The first 300 people to attend the event will receive postcards.

General advance tickets will cost 1,000 yen (about US$9), and same-day tickets will cost 1,200 yen (US$11). Children in junior high school or younger will be able to enter for 600 yen (US$5). Family Mart convenience stores in Japan are offering advance tickets until June 2.

Kondō received a Meritorious Service Award at this year's Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
