Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock Accessories Take Cosplay Out of This World

K. Uno's character jewelry and accessory brand U-Treasure announced at an unveiling event at its pop-up shop in Tokyo on Thursday that it will release two more accessories inspired by Leiji Matsumoto's works. U-Treasure unveiled a Maetel Necklace and Harlock Skull Belt alongside its previously released Galaxy Express 999 jewelry.

The new jewelry will celebrate Matsumoto's 80th birthday, which will be on January 25, 2018. U-Treasure previously released a Galaxy Express 999 necklace, Maetel broach, and three types of Maetel rings (all seen right in image above).

The new Maetel Necklace is a faithful recreation of the character's pendant in the Galaxy Express 999 manga and anime. The 20-millimeter (about 0.79-inch) pendant includes detailed engraving and is smaller than Maetel's actual pendant so that real-world adults can wear the necklace in their daily lives. This is the first time that Maetel's pendant is being made into jewelry. The silver version of the necklace will cost 15,120 yen (about US$135), and the 18-carat yellow gold version will cost 100,000 (US$892).

The Harlock Skull Belt is a recreation of Harlock's belt from the Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga and anime. The belt buckle has a three-dimensional skull on the front and a laser engraving of Matsumoto's signature on the back. The belt itself is made of leather from the domestic leather company Tochigi Leather. The belt will cost 19,440 yen (US$173).

In addition to representatives from K. Uno and the Leiji Matsumoto merchandise maker Zero Good Universe, Matsumoto himself appeared and spoke at the event. He said, "Since I was young, I was interested in design. But never in my wildest dreams did I think things I drew would be made into solid objects. I'm truly happy. I will do my best after this, too." He also noted that he isn't pleased with this year's birthday, and he would like to stop time. However, he said that seeing his work being made into real objects feels like time has stopped. Matsumoto added, "I'm also thinking of new characters and other things. I want to keep trying new things." The manga creator had said in March that he wants to create a story that ties together all his previous works.

The new necklace and belt will go on sale at U-Treasure Pop Up Shop in Shinjuku, Tokyo and on U-Treasure's website on July 6.

Earlier this month, U-Treasure revealed new Kingdom Hearts jewelry that includes necklaces, an engagement ring, and wedding bands. The brand has previously offered jewelry inspired by Final Fantasy, One Piece, Detective Conan, Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Touken Ranbu, and other works.
