Manga Thief Pair Allegedly Make Off With Over 100 Volumes Before Apprehension

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

An unemployed man and a female middle school student were apprehended by Higashinada police in Hyogo prefecture on Tuesday after the pair allegedly stole 38 manga volumes. The duo were caught after taking the volumes from bookstore on Tuesday. The volumes have an estimated value of about 21,000 yen (US$192) and both parties admitted to the charges.

The Kobe Shimbun NEXT website describes the manga as taking place in China during the Sengoku period. The plot bears similarities to Yasuhisa Hara's Kingdom manga series.

The 38 volumes might not be the only manga the pair made off with recently. They both resemble two thieves that stole 100 manga volumes in a paper bag from the same bookstore two days ago that were caught on security footage. The store manager discovered that the individuals visited the store again and called police which led to the recent arrest.

According to the police, the man and 14-year-old girl are acquaintances. Why they needed 138 volumes of manga, be it to resell or hole up in a room and marathon through it, is unknown.
