Director Takashi Miike Signs on for 2nd Season of Live-Action Magical Girl Show

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Japanese director Takashi Miike has directed a little bit of everything and what you know him for is highly dependent on when you were introduced to his career. The older crowd probably knows him from his visceral horror films like Audition and Ichi the Killer while younger fans probably caught on to his adaptative works like Ace Attorney, Mogura no Uta, Blade of the Immortal, As the Gods Will, Terra Formars, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I. The director hasn't completely abandoned his hyper-violent roots, but he's definitely changed it up by adding more comedic works to his repertoire. (I always thought Ichi the Killer was at least a little funny, but...)

Besides his film work, Miike has also dabbled in television, and it isn't a gritty crime drama or slapstick comedy. Miike's helming the second season of a live-action special effects show for young girls. It's a magical girl show titled Mahō × Senshi Maji Majo Pures! and it blends idols, magic and its fair share of magic wands. The show will premiere this spring with Miike serving as general director and supervising the series' dance choreography.

The plot is simple enough. Three magic-using girls protect the world from evil with the power of magic and dancing. Momoka Aino (played by Yuki Miyoshi) transforms into Maji Moji Pure on her first day of middle school. She combines her powers with Rin Shirayuki (Momoka Sumitani) and Mitsuki Hanamori (Misaki Tsuruya) to fight evil.

The series is a collaboration with toy maker Takara Tomy. The series also stars Sakura Andō as the voice of the CG cat mascot Mokonyan, former AKB48 idol Mariko Shinoda as Tiara, Kenichi Endō as the head villain Jama Danshuku (literally "Annoying Baron"), and Miki Akosuya, Louis Kurihara, and Dame Nojō as his henchmen.
