Mr. Osomatsu's Siblings Morph Into Iconic Tezuka Characters

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The Mr. Osomatsu anime and Tezuka Productions teased the new "Tezuka Osamatsu-san" (Mr. Osamatsu Tezuka) collaborative work on April Fool's Day. The announcement caused a stir, but fans were unsure if the project was real. Staff confirmed on Friday that a real version of the project is celebrating the 90th birthday of the late "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka.

Tezuka Productions' animation staff member Tsunogai drew Tezuka-style illustrations of the Matsuno sextuplets, and Mr. Osomatsu character designer Naoyuki Asano drew the siblings in more obvious Tezuka character cosplay. In the illustrations, Osomatsu is Astro Boy (Otom), Karamatsu is Black Jack (Karack Jack), Choromatsu is Phoenix (Hinochoro), Ichimatsu is Hyakkimaru (Ikkimaru), Jūshimatsu is Leo (Jyushio), and Todomatsu is Sapphire (Tottya).

The Rakuten Collection website is offering a character goods lottery for the collaboration from April 6-20. The prizes include an acrylic plate, sitting plush (six varieties; seen below), acrylic stands (six varieties), and big tin badges (six varieties). Each attempt costs 600 yen (about US$6), and the website lists the odds to win each item.

A promotion will run at Animate JMA Tokyo Tower from April 23 to May 13 and offer limited-edition merchandise.

A collaboration cafe will run at two Animate Cafes in Tokyo from April 23 to May 27 and at three Sweets Paradise locations in Japan between April 23 and May 31. The Animate Cafe menu will include items such as a cream puff, dessert dip, and character-inspired drinks. Each order will come with an exclusive coaster.

People who spend at least 2,000 yen (about US$19) at the Animate Cafes on applicable food, drinks, and goods will be able to receive one of three exclusive postcards. People who spend that amount at both an Animate Cafe and a Sweets Paradise location will be able to receive an original illustration card.

A Tezuka Mix magazine project was also planned to mark Tezuka's 90th birthday. However, the project's official website recently announced that the magazine's launch has been indefinitely postponed.
