Devilman Crybaby Important Announcement is a Sinfully Stylish Car

Anime News Network's merchandise coverage sponsored by Tokyo Otaku Mode.

Last month, the staff of DEVILMAN crybaby teased an important announcement would be made during a live stream presentation to commemorate the show's Blu-ray Disc box set. The staff didn't announce any new anime developments from director Masaaki Yuasa and the team at Science SARU. Instead, an onslaught of events and merchandise were revealed, including a DEVILMAN crybaby car.

Details so far are scarce, but an official DEVILMAN crybaby car by Mitsuoka Motors is in the works. The car manufacturer is known for its unconventional stylings. One of its most striking cars, the 2006 Mitsuoka Orochi, appeared in the anime series as Ryo's vehicle of choice.

These limited edition vehicles cost 10,500,000 yen (around US$89,000) when they were released over ten years ago, so who knows how much the company's DEVILMAN crybaby car will go for.

The stream also unleashed a wave of more modestly priced merchandise, at least by comparison. A "DEVILMAN crybaby SABBATH SHIBUYA" pop-up shop will open at the Tower Records Shibuya store with limited edition goods on May 23 and run until June 17. An exhibition of materials from all 10 episodes and life-size character panels will be on display. Visitors will receive the DEVILMAN crybaby BOOTLEG booklet and a special sticker. The series will also screen with the "DEVILMAN NIGHT kensuke ushio LIVE @WOMB" short at Tower Records on May 30.

A second pop-up store in collaboration with Comic Natalie will open at BEAMS Japan in Shinjuku.

The Aniplex+ store is also offering a second round of orders for the DEVILMAN crybaby statues based on the anime's key visual starting on May 23. The statues measure 700mm high (27.5in) and are available in "Teaser color" and "Real color" versions. The Teaser color statue is more akin to the color scheme of the original anime and also glows under black light.

The statues cost 150,000 yen (US$1,375) each and are scheduled to ship in July. Customers will also receive a B2-size wall scroll as a gift.

There will also be upcoming DEVILMAN crybaby events in celebration of the box set's release on May 30. A full-night event at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater will run from 6 pm on May 25 to 4:15 am on May 26. Voice actors Kōki Uchiyama (Akira Fudō) and Megumi Han (Miki Makimura) will be present for the first half of the event. The theater will screen the entire DEVILMAN crybaby series during the event's second half starting at midnight. Attendees will receive a special sticker and the DEVILMAN crybaby BOOTLEG booklet as gifts.

That's a lot of celebrating for one anime series' home video release. But it doesn't stop there. See, the actual Blu-ray box set itself is packed with some pretty cool stuff. The full production limited edition costs 28,000 yen yen (US$265) and comes with:

  • The entire anime series
  • The original soundtrack Night Versions and EXTRA (remix) soundtrack by kensuke ushio
  • 100-page "animation making" book: includes interviews with 23 staff members including director Masaaki Yuasa
  • 100-page artwork collection
  • Bonus footage including the "DEVILMAN NIGHT kensuke ushio LIVE @WOMB" short
  • English subtitles
  • Audio commentary with cast and staff for every episode
  • All in an art box by character designer Kiyotaka Oshiyama

There's also bonus merchandise depending on where you pick up your box set, so some choices (or sacrifices) are going to have to be made here. Fortunately, all stores will include an additional CD of the freestyle rap tracks that appear in the anime series. Meanwhile, Aniplex+ will offer a 12-inch vinyl record of six tracks from the anime's soundtrack, along with an booklet, and picture contest collection.

Amazon Japan will bundle a letter opener featuring Devilman's silhouette.

Tower Records will include a mousepad.

That's a lot of options for you import-happy fans. Which items are on your must-have list?
