posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

An upcoming NHK BS Premium's Bi no Tsubo (Pot of Beauty) television program will highlight the world of classic girls' manga on July 27. The program will feature interviews with genre giants Riyoko Ikeda of Rose of Versailles fame, Glass Mask's Suzue Miuchi, and arguably the king of eye sparkles, Macoto Takahashi. The episode is titled "Kokoro Tokimeku Shōjo Manga" (Heart-Pounding Girls Manga) and will discuss the genre's post-war roots, how heroines have evolved over time, and the hidden story behind the birth of of one of Ikeda's most popular characters.

Bi no Tsubo is a program dedicated to all things beautiful. Each episode focuses on three points, usually to help viewers pick different kinds of beautiful things to add to their own daily lives. The three points in the upcoming manga episode are "presentation," "heroine," and "genre". The expression portion will look at the sparkling eyes of shojo manga characters and the manga genre's flowery backgrounds with an interview with Macoto Takahashi and Suzue Miuchi.

The heroine portion will look at the evolution of female characters in shojo manga. The segment will include an interview with Meiji University professor and manga researcher Yukari Fujimoto. The genre portion includes an interview with Riyoko Ikeda where she discusses the difficulty of drawing readers into a manga where they sympathize with the characters.
