Chihayafuru Actress Suzu Hirose Promotes 2020 Olympics Volunteers in New Ads

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are quickly approaching. Japan has already unveiled its mascots and began selecting characters such as Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, and Naruto to appear on official Olympic and Paralympic merchandise. The closer the sporting event gets, the more likely we are to see celebrities coming out to support it. Starting in September, Chihayafuru live-action film actress Suzu Hirose will appear in commercials to recruit Olympic volunteers.

Hirose appears in a commercial that was shot in the gymnasium of Tokyo Mitaka Secondary School and features actual students. The actress commented on the commercial and said, "Volunteers are truly indispensable in building our Olympic and Paralympic Games, and I think that it is a rewarding activity. As 2020 approaches, the we need 110,000 volunteers. I hope many people will be interested in volunteering at the Tokyo 2020 Games and then apply."

The ad shows Hirose walk forward and nail a three-point shot in a basketball hoop. Those watching might think this was the result of clever editing, but a longer behind-the-scenes video shows that it was all Hirose.

Hirose starred as the titular character in the three live-action Chihayafuru films. The third film, Chihayafuru: Musubi, opened in theaters in Japan on March 17. She won Best Supporting Actress at 41st Japan Academy Awards this year for her role as Sakie Yamanaka in Hirokazu Kore-eda's The Third Murder (Sandome no Satsujin).
