Producer Reveals Sunrise, Production I.G Animated April's Azur Lane Commercial

Team that animated commercial also handled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

In an interview with Sisilala TV news website on Monday, Sunrise producer Osamu Taniguchi revealed that the animation studio produced a commercial for the Chinese smartphone game Azur Lane that debuted earlier this year in April. Taniguchi explained that the same team that handled the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime handled the commercial. Taniguchi also added that Production I.G did the finishing work on the commercial.

Taniguchi also explained that he wanted to insert a "makeup" layer for the characters in the commercial, citing Wit Studio's work on Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress as an example. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is notable for employing Sachiko Matsumoto as "Chief Makeup Animator" to apply a separate layer of "makeup" to characters.

In the game for iOS and Android devices, players collect World War II ships from various countries and use fleets of six ships to battle enemies.

Shanghai Manjuu and Xiamen Yongshi developed the game, and bilibili released it in China in May 2017. Shanghai Yostar released it in Japan September 2017. The game has become popular in Japan, and a collaboration with the Japanese Hyperdimension Neptunia game ran in December. XD Global also released the game in South Korea in February 2018.
