Castle in the Sky, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Anime Art Director Offers Art Book, Signed Prints

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Art director Nizo Yamamoto has lent his talents to many anime such as Castle in the Sky, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Magnetic Rose. The upcoming Yamamoto Nizo Hyakkei (100 Views of Nizo Yamamoto) are collection will offer an overview of his background art and other contributions to anime when it ships this fall.

The book highlights background art for films Yamamoto served as art director for, including Jarinko Chie, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. It also features background art from the Etrian Odyssey game, key visuals from the Barakamon television anime, and landscape art of places throughout Japan. The book includes 100 pieces of artwork from Yamamoto. In addition, it publishes designs for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Grave of the Fireflies, as well as image boards for the latter film.

The book is available by itself, but Amazon is also offering sets that include an art print signed by Yamamoto with a serial number. The reproduction art offered in the sets is either Yamamoto's "Umibe no Shōjo" (Girl by the Seaside) painting created specifically for the set, a scene from Castle in the Sky, or a "Fumikiri" (Railroad Crossing) design image for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Amazon is accepting pre-orders for all four items until September 2, and the retailer will only offer a total of 1,000 items. The book alone costs 12,960 yen (about US$117). Each book and art set has a different price; the "Umibe no Shōjo" set costs 21,600 yen (about US$195), the Castle in the Sky set costs 108,000 yen (about US$976), and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time set costs 54,000 yen (about US$488). Orders will be delivered on October 31.
