Evangelion Creator Hideaki Anno Has Another Pint in Beer Commercial

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Evangelion director Hideaki Anno's adventures with beer commercials continues with his second round of appearances in Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label commercials. Sapporo Beer posted the commercials on their website on November 2.

In the videos, actor Satoshi Tsumabuki asks questions to a celebrity whose age corresponds to the floor the elevator stops at. Anno represents the 58th floor.

In the 15-second version of the commercial, Tsumabuki asks, "What is something you can only do in anime?" Anno responds: "It's the closest thing you can get to the embodiment of one's imagination. You can make things that can't move in real life."

In the 30-second version of the commercial, Tsumabuki asks, "Is the voice important?" Anno responds: "Animation is full of things that don't actually exist. But the one tangible thing is the voice of people. It's the only raw thing."

Tsumabuki then asks, "What's the last scene about?" Anno replies: "It's pretty. It's a pretty way to end things."

Anno first appeared in a Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label ad earlier this year on June 30. His appearances are part of the beer brand's "Grown-Up Elevator" commercial series.

The final new Evangelion film, Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||, is in production. The first three films in the tetralogy, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, debuted in 2007, 2009, and 2012 respectively. Anno also directed the successful Shin Godzilla film with Shinji Higuchi in 2016.
