Light novel and manga series printed 2.2 million copies between February and April this year.

The Rising of the Shield Hero light novel and manga series is celebrating 6.2 million copies in print with an ad narrated by Filo (voiced by Rina Hidaka) and Melty (voiced by Maaya Uchida). The ad was posted on the KADOKAWAanime YouTube channel on April 10 and promotes the 13th volume of the manga, which will release in Japan on April 23.

The Rising of the Shield Hero has been a commercial success since the television anime adaptation began airing in January. In February, the series announced that it had 4 million copies in print. In just two months, a further 2.2 million copies have been printed.

Aneko Yusagi first published The Rising of the Shield Hero as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō (Let's become novelists) in 2012. It was first collected and published by Media Factory in Japan in August 2013. Aiya Kyū launched the manga adaptation in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Flapper magazine in 2014. One Peace Books is releasing the novel and manga in English. The publisher describes the novels' first compiled book volume:

Naofumi Iwatani, an uncharismatic otaku who spends his days on games and manga, suddenly finds himself summoned to a parallel universe! He discovers he is one of four heroes equipped with legendary weapons and tasked with saving the world from its prophesied destruction. As the Shield Hero, the weakest of the heroes, all is not as it seems. Naofumi is soon alone, penniless, and betrayed. With no one to turn to, and nowhere to run, he is left with only his shield. Now, Naofumi must rise to become the legendary Shield Hero and save the world!
